Diabetes Foot Assessments

“Every 30 seconds a lower limb or part of a lower limb is amputated somewhere in the world as a consequence of diabetes.“ - International Diabetes Federation, 2017

The potential effects of diabetes on the feet are often misunderstood or ignored, which is why diabetes foot assessments are an important part of your diabetes management plan.

Diabetes can affect the feet in two main ways:

  • Nerve damage that manifests as pins and needles, numbness, burning or loss of feeling in the feet.
  • Poor blood flow to the feet and lower limbs.

Diabetics also often suffer from other conditions that can increase the risk of developing foot problems. These include heart and vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, and other nerve conditions.

We take the time to explain and help you understand how and why diabetes-related foot complications happen and ways to prevent them from developing. We encourage all our patients with diabetes to adopt a proactive approach so you can manage your diabetes and continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Your consult may include:

  • Neurological and vascular screening
  • Wound management and prevention
  • General foot and nail care
  • Footwear and fitting advice
  • Pressure deflection

After your diabetic consultation, a full report will be sent to your GP or your referring specialist.

If you have foot concerns related to other causes, our other services include toenail & foot skin care, sport and biomechanics podiatry, and children’s podiatry.

Sports & Biomechanics Podiatrists Warrnambool

Sports & Biomechanics

The cause behind your foot and leg pain can vary. Our highly-trained podiatrists are skilled in diagnosing symptoms and implementing a targeted treatment plan.

A biomechanical assessment pertains to any postural, structural or movement concerns affecting the lower limb, which may include areas of the lower back, hip, knee, ankle and feet.

During this assessment, our podiatrists will take a thorough case history, check your joint range of motion, test muscle strength, analyse the way you walk, and the wear on your shoes. From there, we’ll work towards diagnosing your condition and recommending a treatment plan tailored to your needs and condition.

Common symptoms we assess, diagnose and treat include:

  • Heel and arch pain
  • Achilles pain
  • Calf and knee pain
  • Painful toes
  • Nerve pain (anywhere in the foot and ankle)
  • Muscle and joint pain in the feet and lower limbs
  • Injuries affecting the feet or lower limbs
  • Ankle sprains and high ankle sprains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Sport-specific lower limb conditioning
  • Foot and ankle rehabilitation
  • Growth plate injuries in children and adolescents
  • Concerns for the way you stand, walk, or run
  • Uneven shoe fitting and wear patterns

We offer a range of therapies that may be appropriate for your concern, including:

  • Orthotic therapy
  • Strapping
  • Foot mobilisation
  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Rehabilitation and exercise programs
  • Gait analysis and retraining
  • Running technique analysis

Our skilled podiatrists can also help with foot issues such as nail and skin care, diabetes foot assessments, and children’s podiatry.

Children’s  Podiatry

It’s amazing to watch your child “find their feet”, so to speak. First steps are always an exciting milestone for any parent to watch.

As your child grows and develops, so do their feet, and this process continues well into their teens.

Children’s feet differ from adult feet as the bones are not fully formed and therefore are soft, pliable and vulnerable to damage. During this stage of life, your child may struggle to articulate the extent of their pain. This is why as a parent, it is vital to pay close attention to your child’s feet.

Does your child…

  • Walk on their tippy-toes?
  • Tend to sit in a “W” position?
  • Walk in-toed (pigeon-toed) or out-toed (like a duck)?
  • Complain of foot or ankle pain during or after sport?
  • Have flat feet?
  • Complain of sore knees or legs?
  • Suffer from ingrown toenails
  • Appear to be clumsy?
  • Self-exclude from sport?

No concern is too big or too small when it comes to your child. Book a children’s podiatry appointment with one of our fun, friendly and caring podiatrists for a comprehensive assessment of your little one.

Need some help with your own foot concerns? Our other podiatry services include nail and skin care for feet, diabetes foot assessments, and sport and biomechanics podiatry.
